A car accident is the last thing anyone ever wants to go through. Fortunately, serious incidents that result in injuries are rare. However, fender benders are no picnic either. If you are ever involved in a minor car accident, the following tips can help you to make life easier.
1. Stay calm.
This is the hardest step to follow. You are likely to be shaken or angry after an accident. Take a deep breath and keep your cool, even if the other person involved in the incident does not.
2. Make sure no one is hurt.
No matter how frustrated or upset you may be after an accident has happened, check for injuries first. Make sure you have not been physically affected and check all others that have been involved in the incident. If there is any doubt, call 9-1-1 and let the paramedics check everyone out, especially children and the elderly.
3. Get out of traffic if possible.
If at all possible, get all vehicles involved out of the road. If you cannot, make sure all parties involved move to a safe location.
4. Exchange information.
Take the time to exchange names, phone numbers, and insurance company information. Don’t point any fingers or admit to being at fault. You need to leave that up to the insurance company and / or the authorities.
5. Call the police.
Regardless of how minor the accident may be, you should still call the police. They will come to the scene and file an accident report, information that can prove valuable when filing your insurance claim. Any official documentation will assist insurance adjusters.
6. Take pictures.
If you have a cell phone, take pictures of both cars, the damages, any marks in the road, and any signs or traffic lights in the area that were related to the incident. This might be a good thing to do before moving the vehicles, if it’s safe to do so. The more information you have, the more smoothly things will go with the insurance company.
